Pimax Crystal Light (local dimming) with controllers

The Pimax Crystal Light is a lighter version of the popular Pimax Crystal headset. Where the original Pimax Crystal was a combined PC VR and standalone VR headset, the Pimax Crystal Light is specifically focused on PC VR. This means that the battery at the back of the headset has been removed, making the headset lighter and more compact. Additionally, the Pimax Crystal Light now only includes a DisplayPort cable that needs to be plugged into the computer. The combination of a high resolution (2880 x 2880 pixels per eye) and a wide field of view (about 125 degrees) make the Pimax Crystal Light an excellent choice for use with VR simulation games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator and Assetto Corsa.

The Pimax Crystal Light comes with 2 Pimax controllers included. The tracking of the headset works with inside-out tracking cameras. It is possible to use the Crystal headset with external Lighthouse tracking sensors, for this you need to have the Pimax Tracking Faceplate (available separately).

Features of the Pimax Crystal Light
  • Pin-sharp 2880 x 2880 resolution per eye;
  • Aspheric glass lenses with a large sweet spot;
  • 35 PPD for super clear vision;
  • Variable refresh rate (60Hz, 72Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz) for smooth gameplay;
  • Manually adjustable IPD (58-72mm);
  • Fixed foveated rendering: Fixed 2.0;
  • Easy installation with inside-out tracking or expand with Lighthouse tracking;
  • Audio: interchangeable 3.5mm connection, 2x microphone.

What are the differences between the Pimax Crystal and Pimax Crystal Light?

The Pimax Crystal Light does not contain a Snapdragon XR2 processor and battery. The Light variant can only be used in combination with a PC, while the original Pimax Crystal can also be used in standalone mode. Additionally, the Pimax Crystal Light does not contain a built-in eye-tracking module (and thus does not have automatic IPD adjustment). Also, the lenses of the Pimax Crystal Light are not interchangeable.

Het oordeel van Unbound
Getest in onze eigen XR-ruimte

Prime displays, cheap lenses
After a series of positive reviews on YouTube, I ordered this headset as a replacement for my HP G2, specifically for flight sims.
The setup was quite straightforward: plug the DisplayPort into the correct connection on the PC, the USB3 connection likewise, and find somewhere to plug the adapter for power to the headset.
PimaxPlay, Pimax's software, was clear.
So far, very satisfied... until I put on the headset.

In the right lens, there was a noticeable distortion and the sweet spot was, in my opinion, smaller than that of the G2 (although I've recently read that you then need to create a little more distance from your eyes to the lenses, which you can solve with a 3rd party face mask).
Furthermore, the sharpest part of the image was to the left and right of the centre, not IN the centre.
Light also leaked in from the left side of the headset, covering the headstrap attachment on that side solved that problem, but that's at most a temporary fix.
Finally, the trigger on the right controller was a bit hit-or-miss, sometimes it worked immediately, sometimes you had to press it a few times before it registered.

Comfort is ok-ish, you can tighten the headstrap pretty well so the headset stays in place, but I can imagine a long session in VR could become painful to the head without additional, again, 3rd party headstraps.

The Crystal Light, unlike its older brother the Crystal, does not have a battery in the headband, meaning you a) cannot use the Crystal Light without a PC, and b) the headset can feel a bit heavier at the front due to lack of a battery as a counterweight.

The sound with the standard speakers isn't too great. It's better than nothing but there's a reason Pimax also offers DMAS speakers. Your own headphones over the top are cheaper.

Due to the lenses, I ended up on the Pimax Discord where it's very easy to create a support ticket and where customer support responds swiftly with the offer to replace the lenses. It apparently happens quite often and it seems to be a known problem.
However, different lenses wouldn't have solved the light leakage on the left side, so I chose to send the whole set back, also because it's not guaranteed that the new lenses would be any better.

All in all, I felt that for the price (€1039 at the time of writing), you should expect more than what Pimax currently offers with the Crystal Light.
