Working remotely with the Hololens 2 and Dynamics 365 Guide

How the Hololens 2 and Dynamics 365 Guides can change remote care and education

The corona pandemic has had a major impact on educators around the world. Video calling technology allows many lessons to continue remotely, but the technology has shortcomings when it comes to teaching practical skills. This fall, the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan turned to Mixed Reality and Dynamics 365 Guides for an alternative solution to these new challenges.

Dynamics 365 Guides is a mixed reality application for the Microsoft Hololens 2 that allows users to create step-by-step instructions in 3D. Developers use text, images, videos, and holographic content to help employees with learn complex (physical) procedures.

In recent months, the Dynamics 365 Guides product development team collaborated with with the School of Nursing to develop a pilot to test how this new medium can be used in practice. The goal is to create a program that standardizes teaching for each procedure and provides flexibility to both teachers and students. with With AR glasses, both the student and teacher are no longer location-dependent and it is easier to provide practical lessons from a distance.

Normally, students practice procedures on a lifelike doll and receive feedback that mimics reality as closely as possible. This often proves to be difficult for the students, because the procedures are very complete and many steps have to be completed at the same time. When the instructor is also not physically present, problems can quickly arise here.

with Dynamics 365 Guides allow students to walk through a procedure step-by-step, or as many times as they need. The Hololens 2 shows them a holographic instruction card with the clues in their sights. Since the interface is completely hands-free, they can perform the procedures on the doll at the same time and then move on to the next step when finished. Each step tells them what to do with a few lines of text, how to do the next step with videos or images, and where to do this with 3D objects placed in the visor are placed.

"We like the flexibility; we think it's ideal that students can go through a guide at their own pace, depending on how well they know the procedure.” – Deborah Lee, clinical assistant professor and co-director and principal of the School of Nursing.

Another advantage of the technology is that a student can perform a procedure from anywhere in the world and an instructor can call and see everything step by step through the built-in camera in the Hololens. This increases flexibility and enables evaluations without limiting the location.
