Everything you need to know about Oculus for Business (OFB)
The new Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best Standalone VR headsets out there. with the powerful built-in processor you no longer need Computer to drive the Headset, you don't need external sensors to track movements, and the entire package can also be purchased for a relatively low purchase price. It is therefore not surprising that Oculus is currently completely dominating the VR market *. But so far Oculus has one major drawback: it is a Consumers Headset and it is made very difficult for you to use it in a business or commercial environment due to certain restrictions. Fortunately, Oculus has found a solution: the Oculus for Business edition. In this blog we will discuss this further and explain what makes this business edition different from the standard Oculus Quest 2.
Oculus for Business removes physical barriers and provides powerful new ways to connect, collaborate and learn.
Oculus was taken over by tech giant Facebook a few years ago, and is now known as the market leader in VR hardware. with the Quest 2 has hit Oculus a home run and they are now among the absolute top of VR hardware for Consumers. Because Oculus is owned by Facebook, they require every Oculus user to with log in an (active) Facebook account on the Headset. For example, Oculus wants to prevent the Quest 2 headset, without a license, from being used in places where this is actually not allowed (such as within a company or at a Virtual reality arcade).
with the Quest for Business license immediately delimits this problem. In addition to the additional software capabilities (such as Kiosk Mode and device management), you may use the Oculus Quest 2 in a business or commercial environment without any problems. You also no longer have to log in with an active Facebook account, which is an advantage for many business organizations, such as government agencies and colleges.
* From investigation of Steam it has been found that a whopping 57% of all Steam users use a Headset from Facebook/Oculus.
Quest 2 for Business Hardware
The business edition of Quest 2 offers exactly the same hardware specifications as the consumer version. It is a Standalone Headset, which means that the VR glasses do not need to use an external Computer. Furthermore, the Quest 2 Headset has built-in tracking sensors, so that setting up external sensors, as you do with on an HTC VIVE, is no longer necessary.
The Quest 2 is a lightweight Headset with with a compact design. Where the Quest 1 still put a lot of pressure on the front of the Headset (which gave you red pressure marks on your forehead after playing for a while), the new Quest 2 offers a much more comfortable experience. The Headset comes standard with with an elastic band as known with the Oculus Go. But for extra comfort, the Elite Strap can be purchased, which makes the Headset just a bit more comfortable. And if you want to do it all right, you can purchase the Elite Strap with with a built-in battery to enjoy the Quest 2 even longer.
In general, the build quality of the Headset is just very good. Only the lenses leave something to be desired. These can only be adjusted to a limited extent, making it difficult for some users to focus the image properly. In addition, although the resolution of the Quest 2 for Business is higher than that of some comparable Standalone headsets, the graphics feel just a bit less good. You notice this with especially in graphically demanding VR games, such as Arizona Sunshine and The Climb.
Quest 2 for Business Software
The Oculus for Business applications really come into their own when it comes to the software. As indicated earlier, there is little difference in the hardware between the consumer version and the business version. But from the software side there are a lot of things that only with the Quest 2 for Business are possible.
For example, one of the major benefits of Quest for Business is the Device Manager feature. Enables business users to associate all Quest 2 glasses they own with their own Oculus workplace and operate it completely remotely from there. For example, it allows the administrator to provision and manage all headsets remotely, including enabling and disabling certain features and determining which apps are installed on each Headset. Since there is no default app store on the Headset, this is the only way to install apps without sideloading. Keep in mind that deploying apps like this requires adding APKs, which means you'll need to work with with business VR app developers for now, e.g. Reality on Demand Studios and Enversed Studios, to get apps deployed properly. Please note: it is therefore not possible to use the (Consumers) Oculus Home applications by default.
Data and data privacy
Data privacy is a constant concern for companies, especially when it comes to employee data. This becomes important in the VR space as VR headsets can collect and report a large amount of data about users as part of their normal operation. While this is certainly the case for the consumer version, Oculus has reduced data collection and reporting for the business version of Quest 2. But data is still collected, especially if you enable hand tracking for gesture control. with You as a user must agree to these terms before using the Headset.
with the consumer version of Quest 2 you must be logged in at all times with an active Facebook account. It is not possible to create a separate account specifically for the Quest 2, because Oculus is actively looking for so-called "ghost accounts". Doing so may result in your account being blocked, making the Headset unusable. Fortunately, this barrier has been removed with the Quest 2 for Business variant. You do not have to log in here with a Facebook account, only with a separate Oculus workplace account (not linked to Facebook).
Sideloading and streaming
Most apps are placed on the Quest 2 remotely via the Device Manager, but it is also possible to do this in other ways. The first is by installing the Oculus desktop app on a Computer and connecting the Headset to the Computer via a USB cable. This will enable Oculus Link, which will allow you to run and stream applications and games on the Computer to the Headset without installing them on the Headset itself. with this method allows you to use the Headset to view and run VR content from the regular Oculus store. It is important to mention that the Computer must meet certain requirements for this to Oculus Link compatible to be.
The other method is through sideloading with a program like SideQuest, which allows you to install apps directly on the Headset, provided you first enable developer mode for the Headset via Device Manager. Please note that there is a limit to the number of managed headsets that can be in developer mode at one time. This method requires the application to be launched with the Headset connected to the Computer. After the application has started, the Headset can be disconnected and used normally.
Conclusion: Is Oculus Quest 2 for Business Worth It?
Quest 2 for Business is currently the best business option for Standalone VR experiences. Due to the high ease of use, the good image quality and the extensive (remote) software options, the Quest 2 for Business offers many applications in the field of business VR. However, if you have a powerful PC and don't mind having a non-mobile setup, PC-controlled VR glasses like HTC VIVE Pro are still a very good option. The external sensors provide a better tracking experience and because the glasses are connected to the graphics card of the Computer, games and applications can be displayed much more beautifully. The new HP Reverb G2 is also still a good choice for playing (high quality) applications and games on the Computer due to its extremely high image resolution.
But are you looking for VR glasses that are easy to use and mobile to implement? Then the Oculus Quest 2 for Business is the right choice!
