Is this Apple's new AR Headset?

June 10, 2021

Apple aims to release its first Augmented Reality (AR) headset in Q2 2022, according to a new research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (Ming-Chi Kuo is also considered the most trusted Apple analyst today).

The research report focuses on the outlook for the main Apple supplier Genius Electronic Optical, noting that the company will co-produce a number of upcoming VR and AR products from the likes of Facebook, Sony, and Apple.

We predict that Apple will launch HMD [head-mounted display] devices in 2022. The device will offer a see-through AR experience, so the lens is also necessary, and Genius is a major supplier in this. - Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple analyst.

Apple is rumored to be working on several models of AR-related headsets, led by a first augmented reality headset. It is not yet known whether it will be launched this year [2021] or next year [2022]. Rumor has it that a slimmer pair of augmented reality glasses will follow, perhaps around 2025.

As recently as January, Kuo predicted that Apple's first AR headset would debut sometime in 2021, but in March he had pushed his prediction back to "mid 2022" - which is more in line with with the new report.

The Information

For now, the first AR headset looks like something we have not seen before. At first glance, the design is reminiscent of ski goggles. with a pair of large lenses on the front and a soft headband look close the device around the eyes. The Headset promises "an immersive experience better than existing XR products."

However, there is a hefty price tag to the new AR headset from Apple. The new glasses are rumored to cost around ,000. With this, the glasses do not seem to compete directly with with Oculus or HTC - but rather to get into the waters of Microsoft [HoloLens 2].

In any case, we are curious to see what Apple will come up with in the near future. At least one thing seems to be certain: Apple is targeting VR/AR.
