Meta Quest 2 vs. Pico Neo 3 Link: What are the differences?

The most popular VR Glasses in recent years was the Meta Quest 2 (formerly known as Oculus Quest 2). The Quest 2 is a Standalone All-In-One Headset, which means that the VR Glasses can be used completely without a PC and cables. For many people, the Quest 2 was therefore the ideal VR Glasses to start with. But the reason that the Quest 2 turned out to be so popular was also because there was little or no competition in the same price range. with the release of the Pico Neo 3 Link has changed that. The Neo 3 Link is the latest VR Glasses from Pico (ByteDance) and has almost identical specifications to the Quest 2. However, there are a number of differences why it is better to choose one pair of glasses than the other. In this blog we explain these differences.

Quest 2 vs. Pico Neo 3 Link

What are the differences between Quest 2 and Pico Neo 3 Link?

Based on the specifications, a number of differences can already be found between the VR Glasses. Below you will find all the differences explained.

Storage

The first difference you notice between the Quest 2 and Pico Neo 3 Link is the fact that the Quest 2 is available in a 128GB variant and in a 256GB variant. The Pico Neo 3 Link only comes with with 256GB storage. The choice of how much storage you need depends on how many things you want to do at the same time with the Headset. For users who want to play with the VR Glasses occasional games and not do much else with it, 128GB storage is more than sufficient. But if, for example, you want to watch different movies on the VR Glasses, or you have a huge collection of VR games that you always want to switch between, then 256GB is recommended. It is also generally recommended for business users to go for more storage. It is not possible to increase the storage of your VR Glasses, so when 128GB is full, you will have to uninstall certain applications or games to free up storage.

Weight (+ supplied headband and battery)

Anyone who has ever put on a VR Glasses knows how important the weight of a VR Glasses is. with especially when you are playing for a longer period of time, you want to have a not too heavy Headset on your head. The Quest 2 is the lightest Headset currently available. with weighing only 503 grams, the Quest 2 sits very comfortably on the head. It is important to mention that the Quest 2 standard with comes with an elastic strap. Although this tire is very lightweight, the comfort is nothing to write home about. The Pico Neo 3 Link comes standard with with a sturdier headband and a battery on the back. Not only does the sturdier headband feel like a more premium product, but because of the extra weight of the battery on the back, the overall weight of the VR Glasses is better distributed across the head. Fortunately, Quest 2 does offer the option to replace the elastic band with Oculus Elite Strap with battery.

Refresh rate

The refresh rate of the Pico Neo 3 Link's display is 90 Hz, which means that it displays 90 images per second. Quest 2 gives five refresh rate choices: 60 Hz, 72 Hz, 80 Hz, 90 Hz, and 120 Hz. In the Quest Store and App Lab, 60 Hz is only allowed for 360 degree video, not for apps, virtual environments or games. The 120 Hz mode is not feasible for most games, because each frame can only be rendered for 8 milliseconds. But some titles still use it to give extra responsiveness and lower latency than is possible on Neo 3 Link (e.g. Eleven Table Tennis).

Wired PC connection

The Quest 2 and Pico Neo 3 Link are both wireless headsets with their own game library. However, it is still possible to connect the VR Glasses with to a PC, for example if you want to play a specific PC VR game. By connecting the Headset to a Computer it is possible to start games from Steam. with Both the headsets can be connected via a wireless WiFi connection to with a PC, but this has the disadvantage that the connection is not always good and the bandwidth also leaves much to be desired . This is reflected with in a lower image resolution and somewhat more latency (delay in the image).

with to both headsets it is therefore also possible to connect the PC via a cable with. The Quest 2 is via a USB-C to USB-A Oculus Link Cable to a PC. This cable can be purchased separately. The Neo 3 Link comes with a 5 meter long DisplayPort cable. The advantage of this DisplayPort cable is that streaming takes place at a higher quality. The image resolution will therefore be better with the DisplayPort cable than with the USB cable.

Controllers and ability to hand tracking

Both headsets have a similar Controllers with thumbstick. There is not much difference in the Controllers, except that the Controllers of the Neo 3 Link are a bit longer than the Quest 2 Controllers. This makes them more comfortable to hold for users with large hands. What does make a difference is the hand-tracking options of the glasses. For example, the Quest 2 offers the option to enable hand tracking in developer mode. This allows you to operate the game or application without Controllers. Please note, at this time this only works for with a small selection of applications. But for developers who find it important to offer users the most realistic experience possible, the built-in hand tracking offers a very nice solution. The Pico Neo 3 Link does not have this option.

Conclusion

Both headsets are very similar in terms of specifications. That way you won't notice a lot of differences in practice. However, there are reasons why it is better to choose one Headset over the other.

It is better to choose the Meta Quest 2 if you:

  • A extensive game library considers important.
  • Would like to use hand tracking.
  • You want to be able to adjust the refresh rate per application.
  • A lot accessories for the glasses (such as Controllers grip, elite straps, stickers etc.).

It is better to choose the Pico Neo 3 Link if you:

  • Want to make a better connection with to your PC/Steam.
  • Do not want to incur additional costs when purchasing an extra elite headband.
