Simulating combat situations
Virtual Reality is frequently utilised for training military personnel and police officers. A VR training can be effectively used to simulate combat or other dangerous situations, and teach how to handle them correctly. A virtual simulation allows a soldier or officer to immerse themselves in a hazardous situation, without the risk of personal injury. An additional advantage is that a simulation training requires significantly less time, space and money than, for example, an extensive role play. You only need a PC, a headset (HMD) and a minimal space of 3x3m
Training in dangerous or difficult-to-access environments
Military personnel and police officers need to prepare for every conceivable situation. Unfortunately - and thankfully - not every dangerous situation can be replicated in the real world. Training in the virtual world is thus the ideal solution to experience a dangerous situation in a highly realistic manner, without having to consider the physical risks. Military personnel can undertake virtual training in a war zone, or prepare for a terrorist threat, while police officers can find themselves on the streets of London in no time to apprehend a drug gang. All this without the accompanying physical risks, but still with a highly realistic experience
Training for complex medical procedures
VR is also extremely suitable for medical applications. Many hospitals utilise the possibilities of VR for simulating and preparing for medical procedures, and schools use it for (medical) students to deliver anatomy lessons, for instance. Here again, the situation can be simulated in the virtual world, allowing you to practice a situation in every possible way. The military can make good use of this by performing a medical procedure under stressful conditions, for example. Or what about police officers who are involved in a gunfight and one of their colleagues has been hit in the arm? With VR, the situations can be simulated so that it is a lifelike experience for the user, and therefore a good preparation for the real work
Practising with different firearms
Choosing a new weapon is no easy task. Weapons are not cheap, and it's not clear which is the right weapon to choose for large-scale use. With VR, you can simulate the use of your first weapon. For this, you can use a weapon with haptic feedback in the virtual environment, making the recoil and experience of your chosen weapon as realistic as possible. This saves the cost of testing various weapons, and gives a good initial impression of how the weapon feels and fits in your hand. If the simulation feels good, you can go test the weapon in real life!
Simulating different types of vehicles
If you want to fly a plane or helicopter, it's wise to first get a bit of "feeling" for it. Students who want to become pilots get their first training in a flight simulator before they step into a real plane. This simulation can also be perfectly used to train for other vehicles. How about someone who has to drive a large truck for the first time? Or a police officer crossing a large intersection with blaring sirens for the first time? All of this can be simulated in a safe training environment, to be well prepared for the real situation. Military personnel can even use the possibilities of VR to simulate a realistic parachute jump.
