Metaverse and Virtual Reality: what do they with have to do with each other?

The Metaverse is hot and booming. Since Facebook announced in October 2021 that it would change the company's name to Meta, the term 'metaverse' suddenly pops up everywhere. But what exactly is the metaverse? And hasn't it been around much longer? In this blog we will explain what exactly the metaverse is, for which applications it can be used, how Virtual Reality fits into the metaverse story, and what we can expect from the metaverse in the future.

What is the Metaverse?

Simply explained, the metaverse is the digital world in which we find ourselves. For example, consider an online multiplayer game where your with friends are walking around in a virtual world. In this digital world you can actually do everything you could do in the normal world, but from the convenience of your Computer, game console, smartphone or VR Glasses. But besides playing a game, there are many more uses of the metaverse. For example, Meta (formerly Facebook) with focuses on the social aspect of the metaverse. What Meta wants to achieve is a complete digital world in which you can walk around with an online avatar and meet with friends.

It is important to know that the metaverse is currently still a global concept. It is therefore not yet possible to just meet up 'in the metaverse'. It is, however, possible to meet in a specific game, such as VRChat. But the big difference between them is that when you meet with a friend in VRChat, you can only stay in VRChat. While if we were to meet in the metaverse in the future, you can go to the different games from the metaverse.

What is Virtual reality?

Virtual Reality literally means 'virtual reality'. It is a complete digital environment in which you can play a game, for example. Where you would normally sit with mouse and keyboard in front of a Computer, you can experience with a Virtual reality glasses on the game much more realistically. The great thing about Virtual Reality is that the VR Glasses puts you much closer to the action. You literally look through the eyes of the main character of the game (first person). This principle lends itself perfectly to the metaverse, because the intention is to make the metaverse as realistic and pleasant as possible for the users.

A VR Glasses can therefore be seen as a means to end up in the metaverse. Just like a PlayStation or an Xbox can be used to get into the metaverse. And Virtual Reality can be seen as a way of entering the metaverse and with interacting with other people. Want to know more about what Virtual Reality exactly is? Then read this blog once through.

XR in the Metaverse

XR (extended Reality) is the umbrella term of VR, AR and MR. with XR we therefore mean all forms of realities. The metaverse is not only limited to Virtual Reality, but will also join augmented and Mixed Reality. These forms combine the real physical world with with the digital world. with Augmented Reality you no longer shut yourself off from the actual reality, but you make a combination between the online world and the world in which you move around. A simple example of this is an online video meeting via a program such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Instead of just being able to see each other through a screen, with you can use AR glasses to show the other person something that you also see. And all this in a small screen in the corner of your eye, so that you can also do other things.

What else will we see in the Metaverse?

  • digital twins: a digital twin is an exact copy of something from the virtual world to the digital world. The most famous example of a digital twin is Google Maps. An exact copy has been made of all roads and routes from the real world, and you can look up exactly where you need to go online.
  • Virtual workouts: As XR technology becomes more and more realistic, workouts can be performed better and better. Think of a pilot who with makes his first flight with the help of a VR Glasses before he gets into a real plane.
  • Social digital life: More and more companies are focusing on the social aspect of the digital world. Applications are no longer just focused on gaming, but increasingly on with getting in touch with each other. For example, nowadays you can with meet a friend on the other side of the world without any problems.

Is the Metaverse the Future?

Metaverse is not the future, but will definitely be a big part of the (digital) future. with especially the fact that everything on the internet is with combined together, and you no longer have to switch games or applications, will be a major change in how we with content to deal with. But we do believe that the Metaverse will always be a part of real reality, never a replacement for it. Virtual and Augmented Reality's place will only increase as this is the best way to participate in the metaverse.
