Meta Quest 2 Facebook account Login changes

One of the biggest drawbacks of the popular Meta Quest 2 was that it required you to log into with an (active) Facebook account. For many users, including companies that need to handle with sensitive Information, this was a deal breaker. And in many cases this was unfortunate; because the Quest 2 is just a very good Headset that is suitable for many applications. Fortunately, Meta also realized that this was not a sustainable concept and they recently announced that they would get rid of the mandatory Facebook account. In this blog we explain what is changing.

Meta Quest 2 users will no longer need to log in with a Facebook account from August 2022

The Meta Quest 2 is by far the most popular VR Glasses of the moment. In 2021 alone, some 8.7 million Quest 2 glasses have been sold. But this could have been a lot more if Facebook/Meta didn't require users to log into with a Facebook account. Fortunately, Meta has announced that it will roll out an update from August 2022 that will no longer require users to with log in to a Facebook account. For example, new users can create a separate account via Meta - and not Facebook. The biggest difference with this is that Facebook's terms of use state that an account must have a so-called "real name policy". It is therefore not possible to just create a fake account specifically for using the Quest 2. Facebook actively checks (with using bots and algorithms) whether a created account is real or fake. And can, for example, delete and suspend an account on this basis. You can imagine that this with name is far from ideal for companies and colleges that use the Quest 2. For example, if you have 10 Quest 2 glasses in use, you obviously do not want to have to log in with 10 separate (and personal) Facebook accounts. But it was also not possible to use the Quest 2 for private individuals who prefer not to use Facebook.

Meta Quest 2 login changes

The new update of Meta therefore makes it possible to use the Quest 2 without a Facebook account. But note: this does not mean that you no longer have to log in at all. Meta does require a new kind of Meta account. But luckily this account is a lot more noncommittal than a Facebook account. For example, you do not have to link an entire social media page to it. And the Meta account you create is only for the Quest 2 glasses. You will not use this account to log in at other places.

What is a Meta account?

with a Meta account you can log in to the Quest 2 VR Glasses and you can view and manage purchased games and apps in a central place. It is important to mention that a Meta account is not a social media account. It is completely separate from this. For users who already had a Facebook/Oculus account in use, it will automatically be moved to a Meta Horizon account. This Meta Horizon account is the new central account used in the world of Oculus/Meta. For example, you create an avatar of/for yourself and give yourself a new name. The choice to link Facebook or Instagram to the Meta account is entirely up to the user. Click here to read more about creating a Meta account.

What's changing for business Quest 2 users?

If you already have a Quest 2 in use, you will be automatically logged out of the VR Glasses from August 2022. The Quest 2 goggles will then ask you to log in again with with an email address. And don't worry: by doing this you won't suddenly lose all your apps and settings. After logging in with an email address, Meta gives the choice to relink your account with a Facebook or an Instagram account. It is not mandatory to link your new Meta account with it, so you can skip this step without any problems. Click here to read more about business use of Meta.

What will change at Meta in the future?

Meta indicates that they are constantly with improving the user experience. For example, they are busy with with the further development of so-called 'work accounts'; accounts specially developed for companies and business users. Al with al Meta therefore seems to be on the right track to bring the Quest 2 even further to the masses.
