DPVR Review

DPVR develops multiple XR products, but in this product review, we will delve deeper into their three most popular models: DPVR P1, DPVR P1 4K Pro, and DPVR E3 4K. The DPVR P1 series consists of standalone VR Headsets comparable to the Oculus Go (now discontinued), and the E3 series consists of a user-friendly PC VR Headset with exceptionally high resolution.

The DPVR P1 and P1 4K Pro are well-built standalone VR Headsets with a very attractive appearance. The size and weight of the headset are reminiscent of the Oculus Go and Pico G2 4K series, but especially the P1 4K Pro stands out by placing a beautiful glossy plate on the front of the headset. This immediately gives the headset a much more luxurious and futuristic look, making it not only well constructed but also very cool to wear!

When you first put the DPVR P1 on your head, you immediately feel that the headset is light and comfortable. You can easily wear the headset for longer periods without experiencing red marks around the face and eyes. An added advantage of the DPVR P1 is that it comes standard with a silicone face mask, making the headset easy to wipe clean with a cleaning cloth.

One of the problems that VR Headsets from Asian countries encounter in their quest to conquer Europe is the software they use. In practice, this software often proves to be very much aimed at the Asian market (think, for example, of a startup screen and initial applications in Chinese characters). If you have no knowledge of this language, it can be off-putting. DPVR has resolved this by equipping their headsets with a more universally accessible interface. This allows you to use the DPVR P1 and P1 4K Pro without any issues, with recognisable applications similar to those you would find in other mainstream VR headsets!

The image quality of the DPVR P1 and P1 4K Pro is indeed very good. The P1 is considered the basic version of the two standalone headsets. The image resolution of 1280 x 1440 pixels per eye is perfectly adequate for playing and viewing standard 360-degree videos. Moreover, the headset is very easy to use with external devices, allowing you to display your self-made content without any issues.

Are you looking for a higher image resolution? Then the DPVR P1 Pro is a better choice. This headset has an image resolution of 1920 x 2160 pixels per eye, allowing for much sharper images. The P1 Pro also has a stronger internal processor than the basic version (Snapdragon XR1 vs. XR2). The P1 Pro is therefore a good choice for users who want to play higher resolution content or who want to use the headset in combination with other VR games and applications.

The DPVR E3 4K is a unique headset. Both its form and usage are generally not found in the standard VR headsets currently on the market. The E3 4K is mainly used in Virtual Reality Arcades in countries like Japan and Korea. The DPVR E3 4K is a tethered 3 DOF VR Headset. This means that the headset uses the graphical power of a computer (thus very nicely displaying games and applications), but it is always attached to a cable. The 3 DOF system ensures that you can only look around with the headset, and not physically walk through a (virtual) space.

In Virtual Reality Arcades, you will mostly see the DPVR E3 4K with more extensive simulation games and applications. Think of the most futuristic-looking simulators, such as a tank, a rollercoaster, or a cinema. With these simulators, users do not physically move through a space but remain seated (while the simulator handles all movements). For this application, the DPVR E3 4K is extremely suitable!

Due to its good price/quality ratio (very high image resolution for a relatively low price), the DPVR E3 4K is the number one choice for VR Arcades and other amusement parks in the field of commercial VR entertainment.
