Ultimate Headset for Racing Simulators
Tested in our own XR space

Without a doubt, the Pimax Crystal is one of the most impressive VR headsets I've tested so far. Pimax is known for their ambition to push the boundaries of resolution, FOV, and performance - and with the Crystal, they've truly set a new standard. This isn't an entry-level model, but a headset for the demanding user who doesn't want to compromise.

What immediately stands out is the extreme sharpness. With a resolution of 2880x2880 per eye and the use of aspheric lenses, the visual clarity is unprecedented. Texts are crystal clear, even at the edges of the image. Colours are vibrant and contrasts deep - you really feel like you're in another world. The headset comes into its own particularly with simulation games such as DCS or Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The Crystal supports both inside-out tracking and optional Lighthouse tracking that you can get through the Pimax Lighthouse module. In our test room, the inside-out tracking worked fine for seated experiences and casual VR. For full-room tracking and precise hand movements, however, the Lighthouse setup is still superior. Fortunately, it's good that you can choose: flexibility is a strong point of this system.

The headset is heavy, that must be said. But thanks to the sturdy headband system with rotary knob and good weight distribution, the whole thing feels surprisingly stable. The included face gasket is comfortable, and there is plenty of room for glasses wearers. For longer sessions, I do recommend taking regular breaks. For seated use, I find this less of a problem and can easily continue with it for 4 hours at a stretch.

The installation is a bit more technical than with plug-and-play headsets like the Quest series. You need Pimax Play software and a sturdy PC with a good GPU. After the initial setup, everything runs smoothly, but this headset is clearly intended for the advanced user who knows their system.

Pimax Play software needs to be well adjusted to find the best balance between performance and image quality.
