1.2V batteries do not provide enough power for the controllers. We therefore recommend using 1.5V (rechargeable) batteries.

No new controller design in update v2
I believe there is no new (hardware) design for the controllers of G2 version 1 and version 2 (update). HP Netherlands could not (or would not) confirm or deny this.
