Working remotely with the HoloLens 2 and Dynamics 365 Guide

The corona-pandemie has had a significant impact on educators worldwide. Thanks to video conferencing technology, many lessons can continue remotely, but the technology has shortcomings when it comes to teaching practical skills. This autumn, the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan turned to mixed reality and Dynamics 365 Guides for an alternative solution to these new challenges.

In recent months, the product-ontwikkelingsteam of Dynamics 365 Guides has collaborated with the School of Nursing to develop a pilot to test how this new medium can be practically applied. The goal is to create a programme that standardises education for each procedure and offers flexibility to both instructors and students. With a AR-bril, both the student and instructor are no longer locatie-afhankelijk, making it easier to conduct practical lessons remotely.

Normally, students practise procedures on a lifelike mannequin and receive feedback that mimics reality as closely as possible. This often proves challenging for students, as the procedures are very comprehensive and require many steps to be handled simultaneously. When the instructor is not physically present, problems can quickly arise.

With Dynamics 365 Guides, students can go through a procedure step by step, or as many times as they need. The HoloLens 2 shows them a holographic instruction card with the directions in their view. Because the interface is completely hands-free, they can perform the procedures on the mannequin simultaneously and then move on to the next step when ready. Each step tells them what to do with a few lines of text, how to do the next step with videos or images, and where to do it with 3D-objecten placed in their view.

We love the flexibility; we find it ideal that students can go through a guide at their own pace, depending on how well they know the procedure.

Another advantage of the technology is that a student can perform a procedure anywhere in the world, and an instructor can call in and see everything step by step through the built-in camera in the HoloLens. This increases flexibility and allows for evaluations without location constraints.
