Can You Get Vaccinated in Virtual Reality?
Throughout the Netherlands, every effort is being made to get as many people vaccinated as possible. But what do you do if there is a fear of needles? Virtual reality can be a fantastic tool to help these people overcome their fear!
Virtual reality vaccination site
At Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the first Dutch virtual reality vaccination site has been established. People can get vaccinated here without an appointment. What makes this vaccination site unique is that Erasmus MC uses a virtual reality headset during the vaccination process. This is particularly useful for people who experience a fear of needles. With the virtual reality headset on, you can swim with dolphins or walk on the Maldives. This diverts all attention away from the needle, allowing the vaccination to be administered without worry.
People imagine themselves on the Maldives or swimming with dolphins while the injection is administered.
Pico G2 4K
For this application, a Pico G2 4K is used. This is a so-called 3 DOF headset. With this headset, it is possible to play a 360-degree video. The person wearing the headset then feels as if they are standing in the middle of the virtual world.

Difference between 3 DOF and 6 DOF headsets
A 3 DOF headset is different from a 6 DOF headset. The main difference between these headsets is that with a 3 DOF headset, you can only look at a screen statically. With a 6 DOF headset, it is possible to interact with the environment. A 3 DOF headset is often characterised by a pre-recorded video made with a 360-degree camera, while with a 6 DOF headset, you are more immersed in a virtual environment (such as a video game).
